Frequently Asked Questions
Detailed answers on editorial workflow configuration, reviewer management, research integrity, JATS XML production, OJS migration, and data security.
Platform & Workflow
Multi-journal governance, reviewer automation, and editorial configurations.
What is a journal management system?
A journal management system is an integrated software platform that coordinates the complete academic publishing lifecycle, from author submission and peer review to editorial decisions, research integrity screening, JATS XML production, and final publication.
Can Manna replace an existing manuscript submission system?
Yes. Manna provides an end-to-end manuscript submission and peer review system that centralizes intake forms, author dashboards, metadata validation, and editorial workflows in one unified platform.
Does Manna support peer review management?
Yes. Manna provides comprehensive peer review management supporting single-blind, double-blind, and open review models with automated reviewer invitations, reminder schedules, scored rubrics, and confidential editor notes.
Can Manna manage multiple journals under one publisher?
Yes. Publishers can manage multiple journals through a central administration environment while maintaining separate editorial teams, workflows and journal configurations.
Can each journal have a different peer-review model?
Yes. Journals can be configured for workflows such as single-blind, double-blind or other review processes according to their editorial policy.
Can we configure our own editorial roles and approval sequence?
Yes. Editorial workflows can be configured around roles such as Reviewer, Associate Editor, Editor, Final Editor and Editor-in-Chief, including required or optional stages.
Can Manna automate reviewer reminders?
Yes. Reviewer deadlines and reminder workflows can be configured so that routine follow-ups do not need to be handled manually.
Authors & Reviewers
Workspaces, tracking, and evaluation access for researchers.
Can authors track their manuscript after submission?
Yes. Authors can view manuscript progress, respond to revision requests, upload revised files and follow the manuscript through relevant stages from their workspace.
How do reviewers access assigned manuscripts?
Reviewers receive secure access to their assigned manuscripts through the reviewer workspace, where they can manage invitations, review files and submit recommendations.
Can reviewers see author identities in a double-blind workflow?
No. Access to author information can be restricted according to the journal's configured review model.
Research Integrity
Similarity screening, AI indicators, and reference checks.
Is plagiarism screening built into Manna Manuscript?
Manna Plag can be integrated directly into the manuscript workflow so similarity screening and related integrity checks can be performed without moving manuscripts between separate systems.
Does Manna also check AI-generated content?
Manna can provide AI-content analysis as an advisory screening signal. The result is intended to assist editors; it does not automatically determine whether a manuscript should be accepted or rejected.
Can references and DOIs be checked?
Yes. Manna can support DOI and reference validation and identify issues that may require editorial attention.
Production & Publication
JATS XML, Crossref DOI registration, and page setting.
Can Manna generate JATS XML?
Yes. Manna supports JATS XML production as part of the publication workflow where configured.
Does Manna support Crossref DOI registration?
Yes. Crossref DOI metadata registration can be integrated using the publisher's authorised Crossref credentials.
Can Manna handle page setting and publication preparation?
Yes. Accepted manuscripts can proceed through final editing, production, page setting and publication-preparation workflows within the platform.
Migration
Moving from OJS and testing before launch.
Can we move from OJS without losing our publishing history?
Manna's migration process is designed to preserve relevant journal records, manuscript history, users, published archives and metadata subject to what is available in the source system.
Can we test migrated data before going live?
Yes. A staging and validation phase can be used to allow the publisher to verify migrated records and configured workflows before production launch.
Security & Confidentiality
Permissions, encryption, and data protection.
Who can see an unpublished manuscript?
Access is controlled by role and workflow permissions. Users only receive access appropriate to their assigned responsibilities.
Is manuscript data encrypted?
Manna uses security controls for protecting manuscript and editorial data in transit and at rest.
Are editorial actions recorded?
Where configured, manuscript workflow actions and editorial activity can be recorded to provide traceability through the publishing process.
Commercial & Support
Pricing structure and editorial onboarding.
Is Manna charged per manuscript or per journal?
Manna Manuscript plans are primarily structured around publisher/journal requirements rather than charging individual authors to submit papers. See the Pricing page for the current plans.
Do you provide onboarding and training?
Yes. Publisher administrators and editorial teams can receive onboarding and workflow training as part of implementation.
